Mark's Volksrod

In the middle 60's one of the first visions of a Volksrod was sketched on a piece of paper. The look was interpreted by taking a Volkswagen beetle and removing the fenders drawing the final concept in capturing the hot rod look. With model T’s and A’s becoming more and more scarce and very expensive, a few Volksrod’s have popped up suddenly.

One of these that happened to pop up when I first saw it on the Boost SA blog, is Mark’s Baby Blue 1973 Beetle, wait I mean Volksrod. Now what Mark did with this fantastic car is something you rarely see in South Africa. They started off by chopping the roof, windscreen and removed the fenders. To complete the look he imported hot rod head and tail lamps. The doors was also shaved and capped and if you look close enough, some of the beetle parts is still in place.
Wheels is still the basic 15 inch steel wheels, with the rears widened by 2 inches. All that Mark did was paint them red, fitted Chrome hubcaps and Atlas white wall inserts.
The interior was redone in red Ox-Blood leather and red carpeting, while the White Wolfsburg Steering wheel helps turn the car the rest of the knobs was also replaced in white and the gear leaver and gear knob also.
The motor was a 1300 air cooled motor, bored out to a 1600cc. The only modification that was done to accommodate was the Empi twin exit exhaust. Other than that, it was just dressed up with a dress up kit which consists of parts colored in red and black and the rest was replaced with chrome parts.

Mark was also successful in getting a feature in the local Max My Ride Magazine and we hope to see him soon in the Hotrod S.A magazine. As u can see there was a Bay Window in one of the pics, that is Mark's next project and buy looking at this Volksrod, u can only imagine how the end result will look like. Until then, enjoy the rest of the photos.
